Ern & Diane Smith .: 21 The Boulevarde, Armidale

A passion for collecting plants often results in a garden overplanted with one favoured genus.

Since a garden is a three-dimensional picture, it has been our aim to arrange the plantings in such a way that every individual appears appropriate to its position – the way it may have occurred in nature. The harmonising of shapes, foliage and flowers is of utmost importance.

This garden comprises many hundreds of plants, many of them tiny. Therefore, it is a garden designed for maximum interest as opposed to maximum visual impact.

You will not really appreciate this garden if you merely look at it; you must look into it to discover the multitude of small treasures inhabiting every nook and cranny, with delightful surprises at every turn.

Many of the plants are derived from imported seed. This year, some 55 packets have germinated. Some will flower in the coming Spring. This means you can expect to see many unfamiliar subjects. Some may be the only ones of their kind in Australia.

Our garden is now three years old and has matured since it was opened in 2008. The Alpine plants have shown their approval of Armidale’s climate, although last Summer’s heat proved to be stressful to some of them.

We love to share our joy in beautiful things, so do come and linger for a while (you’ll need at least an hour) in the fascinating world of Alpines.
