Keith & Joan Clark .: 'Deerbrook', 162 Gostwyck Road, Armidale

When we purchased Deerbrook in January 2001 there was only a small garden in front of the house consisting of white standard roses and a Japanese box hedge, so in August we had a landscape design drawn up by Susan Ross and so began our garden. As the house is built on top of a ridge we have magnificent views to the east & west and have endeavored to retain an uninterrupted view to the east.

Our aim has been to develop an easy care garden to enjoy and not become a slave to, and as the trees we have planted both inside and outside the yard grow, we hope we are in the process of achieving this. On the western side of the garden there are photinia hedges, natives and various trees with wattles and poplars outside the yard to help block out the westerly winds, hoping to create a micro climate more conducive to the growing of the plants. As frosts can be very severe in the winter, all plants and shrubs have to be frost resistant. A pergola with Wisteria covering quite a large proportion of the structure is situated to the North of the house with a curved hedge of Escallonia and a grove of Birch trees.

There is a small enclosed court yard off the living area on the western side of our home and in one corner tree ferns grow happily. Ornamental grape vines grow along the eastern and western verandahs .

It could be said that our garden is a “garden in progress” as it is just ten years since we started it. We hope you enjoy the garden and view when you visit.
