 | Ashleigh Burnside .: 798 Booralong Road, Armidale |
I moved to my new home on Boorolong Rd in September 2006. It was a house sitting on a bare plot in the middle of a paddock!!
The ha-ha wall was built after the gravel was extracted for the road construction.
In December of 2006, 12 truck loads of mulch were delivered fro the area in front of the house for the start of the native garden. From then on I have been planting out tube stock mostly purchased from the Armidale Tree Group Nursery and the Native Plant Society stalls at the Sunday markets.
Whilst planting was going on in the garden, it was also going on in the paddocks where hundreds of trees were being planted in the gully and tree lines.
My aim was to have a native garden that blends in with its surrounds and at the same time allowed me to look out on the natural scenery and at Mount Duval and Little Duval.
To me, the greatest achievement has been the covering of the ha-ha with firstly Lomandra to hold the bank and then with grevillias and then the gradual introduction of many more species to form a mat to cover the clay.
At this stage many species are self seeding after the great season over Spring 2010 and Summer 2011. As I enjoy propagating many of my plants are from seeds and cuttings from friend’s gardens.
All soil has been transported in for the back area so a lot of shovelling and barrowing has been done over the past 4 years.
My garden is a one person effort to provide an interesting setting for my home and a pleasant environment in which to live and as in all gardens in an ongoing project.
As there are no paths, please take time to wander and enjoy.
